Technically Chapter VIII in Georges Hébert’s section on functional exercises, from his Practical Guide to Physical Education, the type of movements associated with the various self-defense techniques, be they stand-up fighting or take down techniques, cleverly weave the fundamental exercises from the second book, Fundamental Exercises:

– Arm positions
– Leg positions
– Balancing exercises

With the addition of not only skill, but also strength work, depending on how an exercise is practiced.
In that regard, because combatives combine basic as well as utility, therefore form a “complete session” (as described in the first book), they stand alone and deserve their own book.
The basics covered can be universally applied across martial arts and fighting styles and methods, and provide a great minimum effective dose of skills.
